Spiral Frog

Remember back in the early days, when music downloads were free?

Well, so has SpiralFrog.com, a new service that officially launched today.

Now, first off, the site is swamped, and it is day one.  The site isn't handling the load too well. Next limitation.. Windows only, requires WMP11, and IE is pretty forward to install, FireFox requires a few extra steps (but aren't Firefox users accustomed to that?)

Now, it is basically Napster To Go, with out the $14.95 monthly fee.  You signup (no credit card, no spyware, no download charge, etc.) and you download.  You can only download 1 track at a time at this point.  The idea is that you might wander around and see advertising on the site (and besides the BK Simpsons Shooter, none of the ads I saw were that appealing.)  You must revisit the site every 30 days to keep your license active. At that time you will take a short survey and all the music you downloaded is extended for another month.  You don't have to redownload it.  Now, lets say that you forget for 60 days.  Well, it is all terminated and won't play... until you go back to the site and take the survey.  No need to redownload everything.

Besides the site being bogged down by lots of traffic today, it looks like a pretty cool service.  Of course, it still needs some work...
Oingo Boingo Search on Spiral Frog
I downloaded Oingo Boingo, Nine Inch Nails and Hilary Duff and Kanye West to name a few artists.

Check out SpiralFrog.com!

PS. They also have music videos to download for free as well.

UPDATE: I forgot to mention that you cannot burn to CDs and it only supports PlayForSure Subscription enabled players (which is many of the WMA 'MP3' players that support WMP11.  This is similar to NaptsterToGo (and actually most NapsterToGo players are compatible with this site.)

After installing WMP11/URGE, when you try to switch to another online store you might receive the following error:

Object doesn't support this property or method.

And the URL mentioned is something like the following:

http://serviceswitching.metaservices.microsoft.com/serviceswitching/bas/BrowseAllServicesWMPPL-1033.html

Try the following to resolve your issue:

1) click the Now Playing taskbar to go to the Now Playing Pane.
2) Close and restart the player.
3) Press Alt + V to show the View menu.
4) Select Online Stores -> Browse All Online Stores.
5) Select NAPSTER, XM or a store of your choice.

The WMP11 Player can be downloaded from the following URL:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/default.aspx

Note that it is for use in the US only at this time, as is BETA.
