OK.. as a country, we should "never forget," but as a person, I want to forget. plz.

I purposely stayed off of most of the internet, dodging news, even trying to keep out of a lot of places where I might come across something.

Was doing pretty good, and then for some reason, I went on my LJ.

WYF.. yeah, the drama capitol of the world.

And there it was.. over and over and over again. 9/11.

Why do I want to forget?

I woke up to the alarm clock going off about the first plane. Wasn't sure what was happening, and watched TV as the second plane hit as I was getting ready for work.  I went in to work. I didn't know what else to do at the time. I had some stuff I was working on, including some stuff for a meeting the next day.

We were all at work wondering what was going on. (It was the internet division of a large entertainment company.)  We tried doing out work, but it was hard.  Part way thru the day, I start to hear reports of people that were on the planes. I read a story about Danny Lewin was on AA11. I called his office to verify it. It was true. I actually broke down crying on the phone. He was on the plane flying out to Southern California. He was going to be at the meeting the next day.

Yeah.. I now have a personal connection. It sucks.

Danny was also considered the first person to die in the 9/11 attacks.

So, over the next few months and years I hear of conspiracy theories about his involvement. How he was in on it, how he was working for the Israili government with the US government to crash the plane, etc.

BITE ME!

So, while trying to grab a quick "bite" about Danny, I came across the following info.  As I had tried to put it out of my mind, I never heard about what happened to him before the plane crashed.... buh.

Daniel “Danny” M. Lewin was a mathematician and entrepreneur. He died at the age of 31 on American Airlines Flight 11 in the September 11, 2001 Terrorist Attack, after allegedly being shot or stabbed. According to news reports of a phone call from flight attendant Betty Ann Ong, to Amy Sweeny at Logan International Airport, as Sweeny reported in turn to her manager, Michael Woodward, Lewin was sitting in seat 9B, and had his throat cut by the passenger in seat 10B at approximately 8:20. That passenger in 10B was later identified as Satam M. A. Al Suqami. The claim that Mr. Lewin was shot has been traced to an FAA memo outlining the sequence of events surrounding the hijacking, but has been repudiated on this point of fact by the FAA subsequently.

If you use the internet often, you are probably using some technology that Danny Lewin had a major hand in.  He is a co-founder of  Akamai, a company the greatly increased the speed of the internet by moving often used files (such as anti-virus updates, video and graphics) to "edge servers." so they were closer and faster to get to.

Danny Lewin co-founded Akamai Technologies, Inc. in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and was the Chief Technical Officer (CTO) and a board member. At the time of his death, he was a Ph.D. candidate at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a resident of Brookline, Massachusetts
