The underlying thing is that it is discriminating against a particular group.

Just about everyone I talked to on the Yes on 8 side had anti-gay comments.

Then they brought the kids and school into it and made it a deeply religious and 'fearful' campaign.

The No on 8 campaign that I worked with was "Vote No on 8. It's Unfair. It's Wrong. It eliminates rights."

The other side was often telling me all sorts of lies and fearful proclaimations but when trying to discuss them they would often say "Huh? I am not hateful. I am just holding a sign that says "Yes on 8. Protect Marriage" how is that hateful?

It because a movement of MEGA churches and anti-gay religious groups.

Considering that, it was extremely close.
